CRUISE TERMINAL IN KARACHI
(Reviving the concept of port activities of the city)
Project description.
Tourism encompasses travel for recreation, leisure, religious, family, or business purposes, usually for a limited duration. While it is often associated with international travel, tourism can also refer to journeys within one’s own country. In Pakistan, tourism has been prioritized by the government as a means to stimulate economic and social development since the 19th century.
I deeply admire every aspect of this great architecture we call the world. Architecture is enchanting and magnificent, and I approach the design of modern buildings with this same sense of wonder. The project site is located at the West Wharf of Karachi Port, specifically at berths 18–19, designated for cruise tourism.
My design philosophy blends contextual architecture with modernity, where form follows function, making the structure dynamic and responsive. Since Pakistan heavily relies on tourism and cultural heritage, I have focused on developing coastal areas to boost tourism through the sea and create sustainable urban environments along the 1,050 km stretch of the Arabian Sea in southern Pakistan.
Currently, Karachi and Gwadar are the preferred ports of call for international cruise ships. With the necessary infrastructure, the cruise tourism industry in Pakistan is expected to witness rapid growth. In this context, I designed a sustainable architectural solution with a unique and dynamic form that respects contextual architecture while serving its intended functions.
The terminal building consists of four floors, each serving distinct purposes:
_Second Floor: A viewing deck, souvenir shops, restaurants, and a VIP lounge.
_First Floor: Immigration and security clearance areas designed with height variations to separate arrival and departure halls, minimizing walking distances and ensuring smooth circulation for high passenger volumes.
_Ground Floor: Administration and service offices, along with facilities for ground transportation.
_Rooftop: A rooftop garden accessible via a viewing elevator, offering visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean.
This project reflects my interest in promoting sustainable design through iconic structures that harmonize with their surrounding environment and complement nearby historic landmarks.
