Initial Testing of Materials
90 degrees is the most common way to produce this pattern, because the light that is focused through a magnifying glass is triangular in shape, and the upper part is hotter than the lower part, as can be seen from the color of the thermal paper.
The trajectory of the sun at 30 degrees is very interesting, and you can see a sharp contrast with 90 degrees.
This is the path of the sun at 60 degrees on a cloudy day.
Since it is difficult to produce patterns without effective focus for a long time, I chose 60 degrees, which allows me to capture the sun's track even on cloudy days.
-Apparatus Testing
The original idea was to use a box and set up the magnifying glass, then the sun could leave traces in the middle of the paper, but the sun was not directly above my position, and if I insisted on using this scheme, part of the paper would be blocked, so I came up with the next scheme.
Through repeated tests, I get the best height of magnifying glass from the ground is 86mm, the best distance between the thermal paper and the magnifying glass is 200mm. Then in the experiment, I found that the thermal paper could quickly change color and be burned at a specific Angle, which was close to 60 degrees. Therefore, I think different angles may be required under different light environments. So to support the hinge, I made two squares and solid triangles of 60 and 30 degrees.
-Middle Review
After testing and evaluating the three substrates and materials I chose, I decided to use thermal paper as my main substrate and sunlight as my main material for further experiments. I was interested in the different states reflected by the sunlight, so I tested a lot of media, but I thought it would be challenging to show the sun's trajectory, so I finally chose thermal paper.
-Further Testing of Materials and Substrate
I am very interested in the change and presentation of light (the uncertainty of sun light), and my experiments are based on the way light is presented in different substrate and changing its density.
Substrate:
-In the first stage, I chose water as my substrate, while changing the fluctuation of the water surface and the density of the water to reflect the light into different shapes. I like the irregular shape of the light, but this scheme is too limited for the following experiments.
-In the second stage, I was inspired by the light reflected into my room. The first and second columns are formed by the refraction of the sunlight at different times (from sunrise to sunset). The morning (usually between 7:00 and 8:00) has a small but intense area and is usually formed in the lower middle of the wall. The following solar facula (density 03) is usually formed between 9:00 and 11:00. Then the next two are formed in the afternoon (14:00-17:00) by the light refracted off the cars or buildings outside and then reflected off my wall. The third column is the shape of the light reflected by the sun in a room facing northwest (mine is facing southeast), in the afternoon.
I am very interested in the different shapes reflected by light from different objects. With the movement of the sun, the color and shape of the reflected light also change, and there are rules in irregular shapes. So I started thinking about how to show this phenomenon. Light also refracts according to the density of the substrate, so instead of using a fluid substrate like water, paper was my better choice.
-At the last stage, I searched some information and found thermal paper, a material that uses a chemical material to smear on the paper to make the paper change color when heated, usually the temperature of change is about 70 degrees. After that, I tested the thermal paper by using candles and flames. Through the discoloration test at different heights at the same time, I found that different temperatures played a crucial role in showing the depth of color, and time was also an indispensable element. Finally, I started my Sun Focus test, and I found that the magnifying glass can be placed at different angles and heights to influence the pattern. Of course, the position of the Sun is also one of the factors to be considered.
