Text description provided by the architects. Amidst the rolling vineyards and ancient olive groves of Zakynthos, the Root Cabin by London-based architecture practice Kasawoo presents a bold and quietly radical response to the pressures of tourism-driven development in rural Greece. Compact yet deeply intentional, the 2.5m x 8m prefabricated timber retreat champions minimalism, off-grid living, and cultural rootedness - a sharp contrast to the sprawling concrete villas increasingly dominating the island's landscape.

A return to origins. The cabin stands on land that has belonged to Kasawoo co-founder Katie Kasabalis' family for generations. Her grandmother grew up on the property before the war, and although the original stone house now lies in ruins, the site still hosts an active vineyard. The family's initial intention was to restore the derelict home, but they were met with resistance from local builders, many of whom dismissed the effort as nostalgic folly, urging demolition in favour of more "modern" construction.

Instead of conceding, Kasawoo chose to honour the past while embracing the future. The original house was preserved as a cultural relic and, in its shadow, The Root Cabin was born - a contemporary timber structure designed not to dominate, but to sit lightly on the land, reconnecting a family to its heritage and opening a new dialogue between architecture and place.

Design rooted in landscape. Kasawoo's design emphasises ecological sensitivity and minimal intervention. The cabin's twisted roofline echoes the rugged silhouette of Zakynthos' mountainous terrain, while its deep red timber cladding nods to the traditional hues of island architecture. Prefabricated in Romania for precision and quality control, the entire structure was transported across Europe, allowing for a rapid, low-impact on-site installation between rows of vines and olive trees.

The interior is a study in refined simplicity. Sustainably sourced plywood panels line the walls and ceilings, creating a warm, cocoon-like atmosphere. Built-in furniture, including a bed, benches, and a compact kitchen, ensures spatial efficiency. A red and natural wood palette weaves through the space, subtly tying exterior to interior. In the bathroom, blue accents provide a serene counterpoint - a nod to the nearby Ionian Sea.

Strategic orientation, operable barn doors, and passive ventilation principles enhance thermal comfort and reduce energy needs, allowing the cabin to function entirely off-grid. Timber decks on both the north and south facades blur the line between inside and out, inviting natural light, air, and views deep into the living space.

A philosophy of living lightly. Every decision in The Root Cabin's design affirms Kasawoo's ethos: that luxury can be defined not by abundance, but by authenticity, connection, and care. From the structural frame to the smallest detail, the project is rooted in local culture. All interior furnishings - bedding, ceramics, towels, even skincare - were sourced from Greek makers, adding layers of regional craft and story to the guest experience.

Local tradespeople were engaged for site preparation and deck fabrication, ensuring the project contributed to the local economy despite the main structure being built abroad. The result is a holistic, culturally embedded living environment that offers guests a chance to slow down, unplug, and reconnect.

Building against the grain. The Root Cabin's creation was not without resistance. Timber construction, while common elsewhere, remains rare in Zakynthos, where concrete still reigns. Kasawoo had to push against entrenched mindsets and logistical challenges alike - from sourcing sustainable materials to navigating the complex transportation of a fully assembled module across European borders and ferry routes. But these hurdles only reinforced the project's mission: to prove that small-scale, low-carbon architecture is not only possible, but urgently necessary in places undergoing rapid and unsustainable development.

Beyond the cabin. As Zakynthos grapples with the pressures of fast tourism and speculative real estate, the Root Cabin emerges as a counter-narrative. Between 2022 and 2023, building permits on the island surged by 80%, with farmland increasingly converted into short-term rental properties. This growth has strained local infrastructure, especially water resources, and is reshaping the island's identity.

The Root Cabin isn't just a retreat; it's a prototype for living well with less, for placing memory and meaning above monetisation, and for redefining how architecture can tread gently yet profoundly on the land. In this way, the project doesn't only provide a physical space, but opens up a vital question: Can Zakynthos - and places like it - remain vibrant tourist destinations while still being sustainable places to live? The Root Cabin suggests that the answer lies in going back to our roots.
