Some interiors seduce through abundance—layered objects, curated collections, every surface doing something. And then there are spaces like Apt 21, a private residence in Barcelona’s Sant Gervasi neighbourhood, that pull you in with something far less tangible: atmosphere.
Designed by the collaborative duo of Skye Maunsell and Jordi Veciana, the 175m² apartment was shaped from the inside out—quite literally. The designers began by studying how the clients, a young family, actually wanted to live. From there, the floor plan was assembled like a puzzle, with each zone responding to a specific need while remaining open to the whole.
Rather than defaulting to the conventional four-walled room, Maunsell and Veciana introduced timber partitions—continuous wall elements that define space while also doubling as storage. Large sliding doors allow rooms to expand or contract, offering privacy on demand without fragmenting the overall sense of flow.
What gives this interior its particular warmth, though, is the quality of its material conversation. Birch wood sits against stainless steel. Lacquer meets raw tile. Polished surfaces press up against textured ones. It’s the presence of both the machined and the crafted—the raw and the refined—that creates a productive tension, the kind that makes a space feel interesting and alive rather than merely well-appointed.
Underfoot, custom yellow-toned Mediterranean hydraulic tiles run continuously from interior to exterior terrace, establishing a warm, unified ground plane. A curved curtain introduces movement and fluidity—a soft textile “skin” that draws the eye and adds an unexpected sensory layer to an otherwise precise material palette.
Furniture designed specifically for the project extends the architectural language at a human scale, contributing to a narrative that feels layered rather than literal.
Photography by Salva Lopez captures all of this beautifully—and honestly. There’s minimal staging here, minimal evidence of performance. Just a family home that knows exactly what it wants to be.
