The
Barbican Conservatory
Series
This photographic work focuses on the Barbican Conservatory, an unexpected tropical landscape embedded within the monumental concrete architecture of the Barbican Centre. Opened in 1982 as part of the wider Barbican complex, the conservatory accommodates more than 1,500 plant species beneath a layered Brutalist framework of raw concrete, glass, and steel. Conceived as both architectural extension and cultivated ecosystem, it forms a suspended garden above the urban fabric of the City of London.Within this constructed climate, dense foliage, tall palms, cacti, and aquatic plants unfold across terraced planting beds and along elevated walkways. Diffused daylight filters through the glazed roof, softening the rigidity of the structural grid and generating a shifting interplay between mass and vegetation.
