Located in Xiamen, Cang Art Museum is housed in a historic building first completed in 1935 as Xiamen University Hotel, the first iconic high-rise in the city’s development. Having been renamed Kashiwabara Hotel and later Democracy Building amid historical changes, the compound has witnessed crucial historical events and preserved profound urban cultural memories. As a distinctive arcade structure integrating Chinese and Western architectural features, its lighting design is developed with full respect for historical context and original architectural textures. Through highly customized artistic conception, the design revitalizes the charm of the old building and coordinates with the artistic attributes of the art museum, enabling light to act as an intrinsic connection weaving together history, space and sensory perception.

The design delivers core innovation through a non-intrusive strategy to reshape the correlation between space and light. The ground floor entrance rejects traditional solid door structures and adopts a creative virtual light curtain concept. Refined embedded light components shape a soft virtual light gateway reaching the ground surface. Inductive sensors installed above cooperate with linear light strips to present gentle inward flowing light when visitors approach, building a solemn entry ceremony. Such design meets the daily operational demands of the art museum, reduces intervention on the heritage building to the greatest extent, and merges light installations into the overall architectural and artistic atmosphere in a harmonious manner.

The main exhibition spaces on the second and third floors adopt unified curved panel modeling to echo the inherent interior architectural language. Concealed pipelines are neatly arranged in the hidden gaps between curved panels and ceiling structures, while customized fixing components stabilize magnetic light tracks between structural beams. This layout establishes a multi-layered lighting system with diverse functions. Focused lighting precisely highlights art exhibits on vertical and horizontal surfaces, primary indirect light creates a unified spatial background tone, and secondary diffused light complements the original indoor architectural details. The integrated lighting system fully satisfies professional exhibition functions and adopts low-impact, reversible construction methods to protect the integrity of the historical building.

Oriented southward, the building gains sufficient natural light throughout the year. Large north-facing windows on every floor introduce gradual natural light that falls along the staircases and naturally stratifies the spatial grayscale. Inspired by this natural light rhythm, gradient colored glass is applied across floors, with warm red tones on the upper levels transitioning gently to calm blue tones on the lower floors. Natural light filters through the tinted glass to permeate the entire building space, converting basic daylight into an immersive emotional experience and turning light into an independent narrative element within the venue.

As a complete design practice spanning rational technical planning and perceptual emotional expression, this lighting solution transforms simple illumination into an essential part of spatial narration. It inherits urban historical context through delicate light arrangement and integrates historical architecture with contemporary artistic expression. The refined visual experience builds deep spiritual resonance between visitors, the historic structure and the city. The project achieves subtle activation and inheritance of heritage architecture, presenting a restrained yet powerful cultural practice that endows this historic building and the city with lasting aesthetic and historical value.
