TORITO STOOL
Collaborative academic project with Andres Avila
Stool designed to honor our culture, inspired by the vibrant traditions of the Carnival of Barranquilla, Colombia. For this reason, we decided to choose a traditional element that adorns these festivities, the “Torito” mask.
The “Torito” mask is an essential part of one of the oldest and most traditional dances of the Barranquilla Carnival, in Colombia: the Torito Ribereño comparsa. This street dance recreates the warrior tribes of the Congo in Africa. Historically, black slaves in Cartagena de Indias held parties where they wore animal masks as a form of mockery towards the Spanish.
