Text description provided by the architects. Seongsu is a district where raw industrial materiality coexists with refined contemporary sensibilities, creating a distinct sense of place. SSOC builds on this context by presenting a contemporary Asian dining experience that reinterprets traditional Asian food culture through a modern aesthetic. The project is centered on the idea of a "new harmony within diversity," where contrasting elements come together to form a cohesive spatial identity.
The design focuses on bridging Seongsu's rugged structural character with the refined sensibility of contemporary Asian dining. RGB lighting installed beneath the façade responds to the shifting atmosphere of the street, subtly changing color to draw visitors into the space.
Inside, a contrast between cold stainless steel and ALPI veneer—recomposed to express an abstracted natural grain—creates a tactile tension. At the center, a freeform bar table breaks away from rigid geometries, establishing a strong spatial identity. The juxtaposition of industrial metal and organic wood patterns adds depth and a sophisticated atmosphere to the overall space.
Furniture design plays a critical role in shaping the user experience. Custom tables and chairs integrated with wine buckets were developed to address both functional and aesthetic needs during dining. This allows guests to remain fully immersed in their individual dining experience, even within a casual setting.
The spatial experience is completed through carefully orchestrated lighting. During the day, natural light highlights the inherent textures of the materials, creating a light and casual mood. At night, the overall illumination is lowered, and focused lighting introduces visual depth. This contrast dramatically transforms the atmosphere, guiding attention toward the dining table where food, conversation, and space converge.
SSOC explores the intersection between Seongsu's local context and contemporary Asian gastronomy. Within a carefully balanced composition of contrasting materials, the space invites visitors to experience a layered form of dining—where the attitude of "new harmony in diversity," food, space, and people come together in a cohesive and immersive way.
