Raíces y Refugio / Airbnb Accommodation
Puyo, Ecuador. This project transforms a former living and dining area into a fully equipped accommodation, designed to offer a warm, sensory experience connected to craftsmanship.
The intervention included a functional kitchen, a suspended dining table made from reclaimed wood, handcrafted bedside tables and shelving, along with a new lighting system that enhances the cozy atmosphere of the space.
The only area built from scratch was the bathroom, which features a small garden next to the shower and natural stone tile finishes. The washbasin, supported by a handcrafted metal structure and made from reclaimed wood, floats above the floor, promoting ventilation and facilitating cleaning.
The design concept is based on the relationship between lightness and gravity, aiming to visually free the space and create a sense of openness and transparency. The suspended dining table is supported only at two anchoring points, stabilized with tension rods and a lower anchor.
The washbasin floats above the floor, enhancing the feeling of lightness and openness. The new lighting system required the creation of additional circuits; the wiring was concealed using a bamboo conduit obtained through barter, serving as an alternative to traditional plastic conduits.
For the exterior enclosure, a lattice made from recycled wood—sourced from a local carpenter’s waste—was incorporated, providing privacy without sacrificing visual connection or natural ventilation. All elements were crafted using reused or leftover materials from other projects, in collaboration with local artisans.
Raíces y Refugio proposes a simple and mindful way of inhabiting a space, valuing handmade work, local materials, and community collaboration.
