Vashon Island House takes its cues from a heavily forested site in northwest Washington state. Specht Novak gives the house a long, linear form that follows the slope of the land, keeping the building close to the terrain rather than setting it apart from it.

That relationship to the site shapes the project’s clearest moves. The house stretches along the grade, while large glass panels at each gable end frame views of the surrounding forest and bring daylight deep into the interior.

The exterior is defined by all-metal roofing and wall cladding. Against the lush green setting, the metal surfaces read as crisp and exact, giving the house a direct contemporary presence without relying on complicated formal gestures. The gable ends sharpen that profile further, using broad panes of glass to open the building to the trees.
