Through its architecture and interior design, the Matisse Apartment embodies a unique lifestyle: one of connection, mindful living, and sensitivity to the passage of time. Located in the lush Moema neighborhood of São Paulo, this approximately 360-square-meter apartment, built in the 1990s, underwent a comprehensive renovation led by Caio D’Alfonso and Rogério Gurgel, the two principal architects at the Brazilian firm Gurgel D’Alfonso Arquitetura. The renovation redefined the original floor plan—which was characterized by sharp angles, significant level changes, and a strong sense of compartmentalization—transforming the building’s complexity into spatial fluidity, natural light, and a more integrated living experience.
项目首先从重新构想公寓的社交核心开始。原有公寓采用高度分隔的平面布局,独立房间的设置颇具1990年代正式住宅的典型特征。设计并未完全抹除原有的三重高差,而是对其进行重新诠释,将原本的阻隔转化为流畅的空间过渡。台阶不再只是功能性的高差处理,而被拓宽为带有弧线轮廓的平台,标示出空间之间细腻而自然的边界。这一柔和的处理贯穿整个项目,在概念层面上区分不同使用功能,同时鼓励一种更当代、更开放的生活方式。同样的逻辑也体现在墙体的处理上:直角转角被重新勾勒成柔和的弧线。地面材质延展至墙面与天花,进一步强化视觉的连续性。
The project began by reimagining the apartment’s social core. The original apartment featured a highly compartmentalized floor plan, with separate rooms characteristic of formal 1990s residential design. Rather than completely eliminating the existing three-level elevation difference, the design reinterpreted it, transforming the original barriers into fluid spatial transitions. The steps are no longer merely functional solutions for level changes; they have been widened into platforms with curved contours, marking subtle and natural boundaries between spaces. This soft treatment runs throughout the project, distinguishing different functions conceptually while encouraging a more contemporary and open lifestyle. The same logic is reflected in the treatment of the walls: right-angle corners are redefined as gentle curves. Floor materials extend onto the walls and ceilings, further reinforcing visual continuity.

PPA House 占地面积为 931.00 平方米,位于一处弧形转角地块,转角夹角较为紧凑。地形顺应街道坡度,整体标高约高出街道基准面 1.0 米。住宅所在区域正处于城市形态逐步确立,乡村形态占据主导的阶段。整体景观并未呈现明确秩序,而是一种折衷、碎片化且分散的状态。基地隶属于一处住宅开发片区,业主希望在此建造一栋单户住宅,包含三间卧室及带顶停车空间。设计的核心关注点在于如何回应住宅空间的公共暴露性——在街道界面长度、地块几何形态与面积的多重约束下,重新平衡私密性与开放性之间的关系。
The PPA House covers an area of 931.00 square meters and is situated on a curved corner lot with a relatively tight angle. The site follows the slope of the street, with the overall elevation approximately 1.0 meter above street level. The residential area is currently in a transitional phase where urban forms are gradually taking shape, yet rural characteristics still dominate. The overall landscape lacks a clear order, presenting instead an eclectic, fragmented, and dispersed character. The site is part of a residential development zone, and the client wished to build a single-family home featuring three bedrooms and a covered parking space. The core focus of the design was how to address the public exposure of the residential space—re-balancing the relationship between privacy and openness amidst the multiple constraints of the street frontage length, the plot’s geometric form, and its area.
住宅建筑占地面积为 357.70 平方米,采用单层布局。平面呈不规则多边形,由周边街道的退界线共同勾勒而成。在多边形的中心位置,设置了一处四边形庭院,这里是空间的内向核心。建筑功能被划分为三个区域:公共活动区位于转角一侧,朝向西南;卧室区沿北侧展开,并于东侧面向庭院开启;带顶停车区位于南侧,形成对立面的防护,并向西开启。
The residential building has a floor area of 357.70 square meters and features a single-story layout. The floor plan takes the form of an irregular polygon, defined by the setback lines of the surrounding streets. At the center of the polygon lies a rectangular courtyard, which serves as the inward-facing core of the space. The building’s functions are divided into three zones: the common activity area is situated on the corner, facing southwest; the bedroom area extends along the north side and opens onto the courtyard on the east; and the covered parking area is located on the south side, providing a protective screen for the facade and opening toward the west.
