The layout of this venue is decidedly unusual: column grids on three directions seem to be packed tightly together by the forces of the surrounding cityscape, while two double-height spaces run abruptly corner-to-corner. Initially, I tried to reorganize the venue into simple partitions, but these efforts proved unsuccessful.

This led me to think carefully about the spatial experience of visiting an artist’s studio. Artists often create enormous installations that eventually end up piling up in their studios. More often than not, these original artworks over time morph into furniture or compartments. The kind of interior space thus originated, shaped through constant “creation detached from (outside) space” and “rational use,” is a reversal of “one-off design,” a process of continuous breaking deconstruction, scrutiny and integration.

In this case, our design embraces the idea of a return to the designer’s God’s-eye view, using “one-off design” to mimic the results of the gradual process described above, in order to accomplish the rejuvenation of this irregular site. The imagined “installations” in the venue consist of two giant conch shells. One is hollow, with its interior forming a spiral space that serves as a yoga studio. The other is filled with several rectangular spaces: an elevator shaft, various pipe shafts, a fire escape staircase, men’s and women’s changing rooms, and a Pilates studio. The yoga space is meant to convey the emotional warmth of a cocoon of safety. The path into it is lengthened, the light gradually dims, and the noise is filtered out until all boundaries are dissolved, evoking a return to the comfort of the maternal womb.

The remaining space outside the conch shell forms a common area connecting all functions. At one end of this S-shaped space are two double-height spaces: uncoincidentally these are the areas with the highest exposure to natural light. The surface of the conch shell forms the walls of the common area. Wooden planks of the same size are plainly installed on slanted supports, ready to be removed and restored to their original state at any moment. Not only the planks, but all the elements in the common area are arranged into “temporarily reasonable” locations, like in an open-ended DIY project.
