Project Background – The “Gardens of Peace” Initiative
Launched in 2017 during the centenary commemorations of the First World War, the Gardens of Peace initiative was created by Art & Gardens | Hauts-de-France to rethink how Europe remembers war.
Across the former Western Front, military cemeteries and memorial sites had long become part of the everyday landscape. Rather than preserving these places solely as static monuments, the initiative proposed a new approach: transforming sites of conflict into contemporary public gardens dedicated to reflection, dialogue, and peace. Together, these gardens form Europe’s first transnational landscape route devoted entirely to peace.
Since 2018, twenty-nine gardens have been completed, with nearly forty expected by 2028 across northern and eastern France. Thirteen are located within UNESCO World Heritage sites. Each garden symbolically represents one or more nations involved in the First World War and is designed by landscape architects from those countries, bringing together perspectives from across the world.

The project encourages international collaboration and cross-cultural dialogue by reconnecting shared histories with contemporary landscape design. Every garden is carefully developed through site research, environmental studies, and close cooperation with local authorities, heritage organizations, residents, and landowners. Native planting strategies, local materials, and climate-adaptive maintenance principles are integrated into each site to ensure long-term sustainability.
Today, the Gardens of Peace receive approximately 170,000 visitors annually and serve as important spaces for public education and cultural exchange through guided tours, workshops, exhibitions, and commemorative events.
On April 21, 2026, the overall Gardens of Peace initiative received the prestigious European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards 2026 in the category of Citizen Engagement and Awareness-Raising. Presented jointly by the European Commission and Europa Nostra, the award is widely regarded as Europe’s highest honor in the field of cultural heritage.
The jury praised the project for “its powerful concept and strong transnational symbolism,” highlighting its ability to connect contemporary landscape design with the memory of the First World War while combining tangible and intangible heritage in ways that are especially meaningful for younger generations.

The Chinese Peace Garden-“Dimensions of Peace”
Site and Historical Context
Dimensions of Peace, also known as the Chinese Peace Garden, was designed by Chinese designers Tian Tian and Chu Junmin, scholar Wang Di, and French architect Laurent Gouyou-Beauchamps.
The garden stands at the entrance to Nolette Chinese Cemetery, the largest cemetery in Europe dedicated to Chinese laborers of the First World War. More than eight hundred Chinese workers are buried here.
Set within the vast agricultural plains of northern France, the cemetery appears isolated and almost forgotten — much like the Chinese laborers themselves, whose immense contribution to the war effort has largely disappeared from public memory.
It is difficult to imagine what these men — most of them impoverished farmers from Shandong Province — must have felt when they first arrived in wartime France over a century ago. After long and arduous sea voyages, they encountered unfamiliar landscapes, foreign languages, distant customs, and the violence of industrial war. France must have seemed like another world entirely.
The profound distance between homeland and battlefield, between rural France and these displaced workers, between poetic countryside and brutal conflict, became the conceptual foundation of the project.

Design Concept – “Loneliness” as a Form of Memorial
Surrounded entirely by open farmland, the cemetery sits quietly within the immense rural landscape of Hauts-de-France. Like the memory of war itself — and like the anonymous laborers buried there — it exists on the margins of collective consciousness.
Rather than pursuing a conventional monumental language or heroic narrative, the design deliberately embraces restraint. The project proposes that loneliness itself may be the most powerful form of remembrance.
Using the garden as a medium — yet moving beyond traditional garden typologies — the design seeks to create a complete experiential landscape where collective memory, individual perception, and historical territory intersect. Through silence, distance, and atmosphere, the garden invites visitors to contemplate peace not as an abstract ideal, but as a deeply human longing.
The project does not attempt to overwhelm visitors with symbols. Instead, it creates a subtle spatial condition in which memory can unfold through imagination, perception, and reflection.

Spatial Experience – A Landscape of Memory and Distance
A narrow gravel road leads visitors gradually from the nearby village toward the cemetery across the open fields. As one approaches, crops partially conceal and reveal the cemetery’s entrance arch, pine trees, and stone walls.
Near the entrance, the path divides into two directions. One leads directly into the cemetery; the other rises gently toward the center of the agricultural plain.
As visitors walk upward, the horizon slowly opens. Facing east, the landscape extends endlessly into the distance. At the abrupt end of the path, a stone bench invites pause and contemplation.
Here, the grief associated with the cemetery is dramatically juxtaposed with the serenity of the surrounding countryside. Violence and poetry coexist. The stillness of the landscape reflects both the devastation of death and the persistence of life.
The boundary between garden and territory gradually dissolves. Facing the immense fields and the invisible distance of home, visitors encounter the profound solitude embedded in the stories of these forgotten individuals.

On the surface of the stone bench, small Chinese characters are engraved — excerpts from the diary of Gu Xingqing, a translator for the Chinese Labour Corps. The text describes the celebrations of Armistice Day as witnessed through Chinese eyes. The intimacy of these inscriptions contrasts sharply with the scale of global history, revealing the tension between vast geopolitical events and fragile personal memory.
When visitors turn back toward the cemetery, the silence of the surrounding landscape transforms into a larger memorial field — one shaped by displacement, cultural estrangement, and the quiet dignity of ordinary lives.

Materials, Planting, and Construction
The garden is built entirely with local materials. Existing gravel paths were preserved, while stone from the cemetery and native field vegetation were integrated into the design.
The planting strategy echoes the rhythms of the surrounding agricultural landscape while introducing subtle spatial variations. At certain times of the year, the garden nearly disappears within tall crops; after harvest, it re-emerges like an isolated island within the open plain. This seasonal transformation reinforces the project’s central themes of disappearance, memory, and rediscovery.

Rethinking the Memorial Landscape
As part of the centenary remembrance of the First World War, the Gardens of Peace initiative represents an important attempt to reactivate public memory through landscape architecture, art, and education.
The Chinese Peace Garden required nearly four years of coordination among multiple stakeholders, including Art & Gardens | Hauts-de-France, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, French heritage authorities, local governments, sponsors, contractors, residents, and local preservation associations.
Despite differing perspectives and expectations regarding the role of memorial landscapes, a shared consensus was ultimately achieved through long - term dialogue, mutual respect, and collaborative discussion. Importantly, this consensus emerged while preserving the integrity of the original design vision.

Conclusion – “Dimensions of Peace”
“Memory is spoken of precisely because it is disappearing.”
Embedded within vast and gently undulating farmland, this solitary cemetery garden becomes a place where memory condenses and quietly hides itself. A narrow path rises gradually eastward before disappearing into the horizon — a spatial gesture connecting fragmented histories with contemporary perception.
Infinite fields, extraordinary stillness, violent history, distant homelands, anonymous lives, and monumental global events all converge within this landscape. Through contemplation, the garden encourages visitors to reconsider the meaning of war, memory, identity, and peace across multiple dimensions of history.
In searching for the past, one ultimately discovers the meaning of the present.

(Funerary and memory sites of the First World War (Western Front))被列入联合国教科文组织《世界遗产名录》,诺莱特公墓作为其中的重要组成部分获得国际认可。
Appendix: Introduction to the Nolette Chinese Cemetery, France
The Nolette Chinese Cemetery
The Nolette Chinese Cemetery, also known as the Nolette Chinese Labour Corps Cemetery, is located near the village of Nolette in the commune of Noyelles-sur-Mer, Somme, northern France. It is the largest cemetery in Europe dedicated to Chinese laborers of the First World War.
Historical Background
During the First World War, Britain and France signed labor recruitment agreements with the Beiyang Government of China, leading to the deployment of approximately 140,000 Chinese laborers to Europe. Around 100,000 served within the British Chinese Labour Corps, while another 40,000 worked under French command.
Most of these workers came from rural provinces such as Shandong, Zhili (present - day Hebei), Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. They undertook physically demanding and often dangerous work, including road and bridge construction, trench excavation, ammunition transport, cargo handling, and agricultural labor.
The village of Nolette once hosted a major British Chinese labor camp, including a central headquarters and Hospital No. 3 for Chinese workers. After the war, most laborers returned to China between 1919 and 1922. However, an estimated 20,000 Chinese workers died or disappeared during and after the conflict. Between 842 and 884 of them — the vast majority from Shandong Province — are buried at Nolette.
The Cemetery
The cemetery covers approximately 3,000 square meters. Its entrance takes the form of a traditional Chinese stone gateway bearing the inscription “古月” (“Ancient Moon”). On either side are engraved Chinese couplets expressing remembrance and honor for the dead.
Inside the cemetery, rows of gravestones are arranged with great order and dignity. The inscriptions, written in Chinese, record the names, hometowns, and identification numbers of the deceased, alongside epitaphs such as “Faithfully devoted to duty,” “Courageously moving forward,” and “Though dead, still living.”
The cemetery was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, one of Britain’s most renowned memorial architects. The commemorative inscription at the entrance was selected by Shi Zhaoji, the Chinese Minister to Britain during the First World War. The text pays tribute to the approximately 1,900 Chinese laborers who lost their lives during the war, honoring them as compatriots and fellow workers whose contributions should never be forgotten.
Preservation and Commemoration
In 1988, the French government officially opened archival records relating to the Chinese Labour Corps and awarded the Legion of Honour to two surviving Chinese veterans. In 1998, a memorial monument dedicated to Chinese laborers was erected in Paris’s 13th arrondissement.
Since 2002, members of the Chinese community in France have organized annual Qingming memorial ceremonies at the cemetery.
In September 2023, the “Funerary and Memorial Sites of the First World War (Western Front),” jointly nominated by France and Belgium, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Nolette Chinese Cemetery was recognized as one of the significant sites within this transnational heritage landscape.
