NO.
Hidden on a busy transit corner in Nangang, Taipei, a small residence has housed its owner for twenty-seven years. While this time allowed the owner to put down roots, what was once a “clever use of space” has gradually become a “daily constraint.”
Renovating this 27-year-old home revealed challenges beyond its physical aging. The owner struggled to adapt the space to the body’s changing needs. Mezzanine areas, once efficient, have become burdensome—requiring knee-straining climbs and frequent bending, turning a once-welcoming home into an obstacle-filled environment.
The ill-suited mezzanine blocks airflow, creating dead zones in the air conditioning, blocks sunlight, and causes hot, stagnant air. This physical and functional stagnation has eroded the living space's dignity. Therefore, the renovation boldly removes the mezzanine to free vertical space.
We sought to break this constraint by hand, letting light and breeze reclaim this six-ping (about 215 sq ft) space, restoring its rightful lightness and ease.
Turning Point: Debunking the Square Footage Myth and Regaining Freedom to Breathe
During our initial assessment, we discovered that although the original mezzanine added 4 to 5 pings of indoor space, it compromised living quality. The heavy structure blocked air circulation and sunlight, while the air conditioning struggled to distribute cool air evenly, making summers unbearably stuffy. Height restrictions also limited mobility, turning the mezzanine into a cluttered storage area. This loss of function made the extra space more of a burden than a benefit. We therefore chose to remove the mezzanine, restoring ceiling height and allowing light and airflow to reclaim the six-ping area.
Design Core: Wood, Leaves, Stone, and Sea—A Natural, Poetic Touch in a Micro Home
The owner’s love of nature shaped our aesthetic. Within the tight six-ping space, we avoided excessive decoration, using materials to harmonize with the changing view outside the ninth-floor window.
We chose natural ash wood veneer with seamless joints, whose smooth, delicate grain evokes the tranquility of a forest through touch.
Walls were painted a uniform tone and paired with vibrant green curtains, reminiscent of fresh woodland leaves, adding vitality to the interior.
The floor was tiled in ocean hues, evoking a fresh sea breeze, while the entrance’s “light curtain” mimics morning sunlight through treetops, symbolizing perpetual sunshine.
Using natural textures in this small space effectively reduces the cramped feeling, creating a sense of depth and breadth within the home.

Functional Breakthrough: Blending Home Office and Micro Library After removing the mezzanine, the main challenge was accommodating the homeowner’s remote work needs alongside a large book collection in a small space. We maximized functionality with precise hardware choices: telescoping hardware designed for compact areas enabled a flexible extendable desk that serves as both a professional workspace and a daily life rhythm switch. To compensate for the lost mezzanine, we extended storage vertically with a full-wall bookshelf, creating a private micro library that showcases the collection as the room’s centerpiece. The redesigned “905” eliminates bending, climbing, and hard-to-reach corners, relieving the homeowner’s sense of confinement. Large windows flood the space with sunlight, blending the ninth-floor skyline with natural elements like wood, leaves, stone, and sea. This renovation reclaims “living sovereignty,” proving that a home’s value lies not in size but in how it supports dignified, comfortable living. Sunlight filtering through the entryway’s light screen onto ocean-like tiles transforms this 215-square-foot space in Taipei’s Nangang district into a natural sanctuary. Here, the homeowner can immerse in books or connect with the world at the extendable desk. By replacing confinement with spaciousness and freedom, “He Residence Space Studio” offers this 27-year-old home a sincere rebirth. Shortened: After removing the mezzanine, the challenge was to combine a home office with a large book collection in a small space. Using telescoping hardware, we created a flexible extendable desk for work and daily life. Vertical storage replaced the mezzanine with a full-wall bookshelf, forming a private micro library. Large windows bring sunlight and natural elements into the 215-square-foot space, easing the homeowner’s sense of confinement. This renovation proves that a home’s value lies in how it supports comfortable living, transforming the Nangang district residence into a bright, spacious sanctuary. Reason: The revision improves clarity, flow, and technical accuracy while preserving the original meaning. The shortened version condenses the text by focusing on key design solutions and their impact, enhancing readability without losing essential details.
