South Shore Hotel Lobby
This project reimagines the South Shore Hotel lobby in Bemidji, Minnesota, transforming it from a standard hotel space into an experiential destination. As hotels compete more with Airbnb, VRBO, and boutique stays, the goal was to create a lobby that feels intentional, memorable, and worth spending time in not just walking through. The redesign includes the arrival zone, reception counter, lounge, breakfast area, and main gathering space. The layout breaks the lobby into a series of connected but distinct zones, creating semi-private areas for different guest needs.
Lounge seating encourages guests to relax and socialize, work nooks support remote work with comfortable seating and outlets, and the breakfast area feels integrated into the overall space rather than separated. Clear circulation improves flow while encouraging guests to linger. The design style is eclectic, blending contemporary structure with bohemian warmth and mid-century modern influences. Clean lines and functional layouts provide a strong foundation, while layered textures, wood, plants, and warm lighting make the space feel inviting and lived-in.
Curved seating and tables soften the existing hard architecture and help the lobby feel more approachable and comfortable. Overall, the lobby is designed to feel more like a shared living space than a traditional hotel lobby, welcoming, flexible, and memorable, giving guests a reason to spend time in the space and want to return. Shown below are images of the original hotel, followed by my redesigned proposal.
