In the 1960-70s most of the residential buildings, single family and medium rise block apartments were built in brick-veneer or double brick wall skin. This house is one of them. With the laundry and the kitchen located at the back of the house and untouched for 35 years, the house was an ideal opportunity for a transformation into a modern family dwelling, adding value yet retaining the character of the building. Janet and Vas Chakar, the parents of two young children bought the house and enriched the neighbourhood of young families.
The space flows from the front part of the house to the back and out to the back yard. The original two bedroom brick house was altered and expended into two bedrooms with en-suites, and another two with a shared bathroom. The timber floor finish was replaced with new throughout the house. Along with the old fire place, whose brick face was left with its natural appearance, the original timber windows and the traditional Australian louvers the transition from the old house to the modern two storey addition is made quite smoothly.
