The Cocoon Boutique is located inside the Global Harbor Mall, in one of Shanghai’s top shopping areas, where tourists and residents crowd into stores at all hours of the day. The brand’s very name gave Area-17 the creative hint to design the concept: a cocoon is a casing protecting the pupa before it becomes a butterfly. By extension, “cocoon” means to cuddle, to spoil, and to protect. With this in mind, the boutique interiors wrap the clientele in rounded and sinuous shapes, which also style furnishings and displays. A palette of delicate shades of pink and the soft surfaces of rugs and upholstery warm up the rarefied atmosphere. Butterflies made of light soar from molded holes in the wavy metal partition, unraveling the metaphor of the glamorous metamorphosis that accompanies clients during the shopping experience.
