Perched on a hill in the heart of the Luberon, The oldest walls of Coquillade Village date from the 11th century and, according to legend, the hamlet was founded by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Sénanque. Two centuries later, the vines began to be developed.
A soft spot for the Luberon prompted Andreas Rihs to invest in Provence. Known for his passion for wine and cycling, in 2006 the Swiss entrepreneur bought the hamlet that was built over the centuries on a hill surrounded by vineyards, and set out to make it the most beautiful wine tourism complex in the Vaucluse.
After two years of extensive renovation, Coquillade Village opened its doors in 2008.
A deep respect for the site’s authenticity and environment were the driving factors behind the Coquillade estate’s major restoration and construction work, both architectural and ecological. The buildings have been developed according to ecological standards (with energy reduction) and a geothermal system (heating and cooling through the ground). Multiple everyday gestures also enabled Coquillade Village to obtain the European Ecolabel in 2012.
