has completed a vacation villa for a client conceived as a refuge from his busy life in New York City. The villa is located on a very remote part of Maui and is totally off the energy grid. Along with white concrete providing both thermal mass and reflection of solar energy, a green roof and solar panels help reduce energy usage. The roof is entirely concrete as well and opens up in the Main Living Space creating a skylight.
Among the architectural features are 3 domes: Kitchen, Master Suite shower and Guest Suite shower. The outside is a special black concrete which does not conduct heat. Colorful mosaic and glass tiles make up the inside of the domes in each of the suites. The black domes echo the black volcanic rock found in the Pond and surrounding landscape.
"The client is an avid art collector, he owns a few of my paintings," explains Paul Minotto artist & director of
. "But this home is meant to be a total escape from life in the big city, including art, at least in the sense of objects.”
The central idea was to separate the living areas yet create convenient connections between them, something found often in Hawaii due to the mild climate. In addition to integrating the living areas with the surrounding landscape, tropical plants throughout the villa blur the boundaries between inside and outside.
