Corgan was tasked with the design for the new Zillow Group offices located in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Zillow Offers is the division of Zillow Group that buys and sells homes. As a new venture for the company, they began with a start-up mentality, initially occupying a local co-working space to set up their operations, but quickly outgrew the space. Zillow selected the Scottsdale Galleria as their new site, a hub for technology companies in search of rich culture and amenities. Because so many other tech companies have relocated to the Galleria, competition is fierce, and Zillow wanted a space that could double as a recruiting tool. Zillow charged Corgan with designing a unique space that would help attract the employees they needed to hire. Because of this unique set of requirements, the project would need to find balance – the design had to be highly creative, but also utilize corporate workstation standards – the design needed to maximize headcount, but also provide spaces that supported collaboration and privacy.
To achieve Zillow’s desire for a space that was an authentic representation of the culture of their new business and shined a focus on residential real estate, Corgan took inspiration from local residential design. The floor plan was divided into three neighborhoods, each of which was based on a local neighborhood in the Phoenix area – Mid-Century Modern, Historic, and Arcadia. The open workspace included accent walls of brick and wood paneling to reinforce the design concept. The meeting spaces celebrate the neighborhood inspiration with decorative wallcovering, accent carpet and unique lighting. The reception was transformed into a front porch, complete with a pitched roof and front door. The break room included elements of a farmhouse style kitchen, inviting employees to relax and unwind in the adjacent backyard-like seating area, which also doubles as a training room and is divisible with curtains. A break room and multipurpose room take on a backyard feel, inviting employees to truly take a break, relax, and eat. Meeting spaces were planned at a variety of sizes and distributed throughout the office to support different working styles. Quieter, more focused teams could be placed in areas of lower traffic and more exuberant, collaborative teams could be placed in areas with more interaction. The plan was anchored with one major circulation path that tied the space together, but also helped define neighborhoods. With cozy features to make employees feel at home, this is not your typical tech office space and Zillow Offers is glad to be home.
