Location | Mayfair, LondonType | RestaurantSize | 3,100 sq ftSHH Services | Implementing Architect & Branding DesignersSHH were implementing architects (working from a concept by American specialists Tony Chi & Associates), as well as branding designers for Umu, London’s first true Kyoto restaurant, which set a new standard in authentic Japanese cooking. The restaurant is a sumptuous and elegant haven of dark materials, stunning features and ultra high-quality finishes, which took the the simple, clean and narrow lines evident in classic Japanese design and added a modern touch, more in keeping with the expectations of diners in the 21st century. The feel of the interior is decadent and elegant with a rich palette of colours and striking individual features, including an entrance glass ceiling made up of Italian Murano hand-blown glass rods and a stunning 1m-high ‘Gathering Table’ by South Korean sculptor Jae-Hyo Lee, just inside the entrance area, made up from sections of raw timber.
