1870 CAVE

The existing building from 1870,in the Pyrgos village Santorini ,Greece consists of a Canava (old winery) a studio, an underground space and a courtyard.

 Design is based on preserving and highlighiting the traditional elements of the building, while minimal modifications are made for the residence to meet the needs of a modern hotel. Canava is made of stone, while the rest of the buildings were restored with traditional methods. The stone was cleaned and varnished, and the rest was painted with colors that match the volcanic landscape of Santorini. The interior was designed with curved sloping walls and was made of mortar volcanic rock and wood. Pebbles and cement were combined for the floor and courtyard. Furniture is antiques from Greece and abroad, while objects from the winery were used as decorative elements. The white – gray color balance with the furniture and Santorini’s natural light and the selected light fixtures emphasize the space’s unique geometry.

 The history of the grapes conversion into wine is evident in Canava where all the spaces have remained open and enlightened as in a museum. The main entrance is shared and ends in the courtyard overlooking the sea. The yard was divided with white partitions, creating individual relaxing private spaces. The residence radiates tranquility and simplicity while it stimulates the senses. It combines tranditional and modern elements, while offering to the user a unique experience
