In our project for a new school in via Pizzigoni-Milan, the school is thought as cultural hub that goes beyond the classical meaning of an educational institute. The building is conceived to be opened to everybody and be used beyond the classroom hours. A place where student and any other citizens can be an active protagonist of the spaces.
The project is positioned in the center of the lot, creating a green belt around it. This belt on one hand acts as a buffer zone with the neighbouring buildings, creating on their edge a private service road with an access outside of the new "car free zone"; on the other hand, along via Pizzigoni, it defines the pedestrian entrances and acts as a connection with the adjacent park, protecting the valuable trees present in the area.
The program is divided into several functional pavilions composed by: the auditorium, the gym, the administration and library spaces, the canteen and the laboratories. All the different pavilions are distributed around a central courtyard and are connected to each other through spaces that can easily be used for many different didactic purposes.
The altimetric variations between the volumes respond to the different functional requirements and allow the spaces to be read from the outside, while the curved edges makes the building easy to spot in its surrounding context, characterizing both the external and internal spaces. The building façade generates a rhythmic contrasted sequences of solids and voids, while the natural light gives it a different readability.
The project aims to achieve high environmental sustainability standards, implementing active and passive strategies to reduce energy consumption.
