蒙特利尔老宅的现代新生

This project involved the renovation and extension of a duplex built in the early 1900s at the heart of Plateau Mont-Royal. The objective was to transform the original dark and narrow rooms into spacious open spaces bathed in natural light.

Towards the street, the design accentuates the original structure of the residence. Facing the garden, the generous fenestration on the ground floor contrasts with the impressive cantilevered concrete-panelled volume of the first floor.

The architectural design is split into two distinct areas. Contained within a spacious open-plan masonry volume, the living spaces on the ground floor lead fluidly from the street to the back of the residence. On the upper floor, private rooms are grafted onto the existing building and overlook the courtyard.

The Western cedar ceiling that extends towards the exterior and the walnut kitchen and dining room fixtures harmonize with the original features of the living room. The circulation areas are concentrated at the centre of the residence, where a long white ribbon constituting the banisters unfurls. Directly above, a series of skylights punctuate the ceiling, offering views of the sky.
