designed for the chattanooga housing authority, ‘fairmount avenue townhomes’ is an 18-unit residential development in tennessee, USA. the project, completed by hefferlin + kronenberg architects, is built in the saltbox vernacular common to the region – with long sloping roofs perfectly angled for photovoltaic panels.

consisting of 9 three bedroom units and 9 two bedroom units, the scheme offers sustainable and affordable accommodation for a range of potential clients. three all-weather pathways are provided to better connect the project to the surrounding pedestrian circulation system and adjacent amenities. the topography of the scheme’s location ePhil mans street platoon villanabled the buildings to both make use of sunlight and provide shade where needed.

eceiving LEED platinum certification, the structure’s form naturally provides attic insulation, while the design maximizes access to natural light. an array of 189 photovoltaic panels are attached to the roof providing roughly 10% of the townhomes’ total electrical needs. the dwellings are oriented to maximize daylight and passive solar heating to further reduce the load on the grid.
