Architect:ASP Arquitectura Sergio Portillo
Location:Polanco, Mexico City; | ;
Project Year:2019
Category:Apartments
This project involved interior design and finishings for a split-level penthouse apartment in a newly-built structure in Mexico City.
The design was adapted to the needs of the three family members along a floor plan that had been previously established in the building design. The lower floor houses the dining and living rooms, a wine cellar, powder room, kitchen and service area, as well as the study and master bedroom. Upstairs, there is a second bedroom. Each bedroom has its own terrace, bathroom and dressing room.
The staircase was placed as a transitional element that transforms along its length to control the amount of natural light that enters from above and beside it, while limiting visual access to the building’s service quarters. Built with RHS, its floating structure is encased in MDF and lacquered wood, which attach to the slab.
In contrast, most of the walls feature exposed concrete, while others are covered with bespoke carpentry pieces that were designed by the firm. In the transition space between the common and private areas, the wooden floorboards also rise as wainscoting up the wall, creating material continuity along the surface.
