When we look up the sky when we were kids, we could see bunch of star lights. However, we can only see the city lights today when we look up the sky. Would we miss the starry sky when the lights in the city cover them up and the disturbing city noise becomes the background sound in our life? Thus, we want to build an art installation for observing the starry sky.
We punched holes on the shell of the cement pipes and installed optical lens in the hole in order to simulate the working principle of the telescopes. The cement pipes were set on an open space of the grassland, there is a great disparity in size between pipes and nature which makes people feel small and humble.

During the construction, we met a studio musician who plays hang drum. The sound made by hang drum give people a sense of peace and quiet which is a great fit with the starry sky. Then we decided to integrate music elements with the installation.
We finally set a percussion instrument inside of the pipes and put a cement pipe which is perpendicular to the ground, linking them with a seamless pipe, so the sound made by the instrument could be spread upward to the sky just like the “telephone” toy of children’s games. And that is also how the shape comes out.
