TEF Design was tasked with completing the Kaiser Fremont Acute Medical Psychiatric Facility in Fremont, California.

The transformation of an existing medical/surgery unit at Kaiser Fremont Medical Center into the healthcare giant’s first Acute Medical Psychiatric Unit prioritizes safety, security and privacy in a light-filled, calm and healing environment inspired by nature.

The pilot project is designed to provide secure, in-patient care for behavioral health patients with greater medical needs than can be accommodated at a typical outpatient unit. Located adjacent to the emergency department and imaging to minimize travel distance to and from both areas — and at the furthest point from the main hospital entry to minimize potential disruption to hospital functions — the partial renovation of the first floor of an existing wing and modest building addition meets strict regulations for psychiatric care in a medical care setting.

The program includes 18 patient beds and associated staff areas, a meditation room, observation room, exam and consultation rooms, dining, recreation and group activity space, and an enclosed outdoor landscaped garden. The 1,125 sf, structurally independent single-story addition provides additional staff support spaces, expands patient gathering spaces, and a new dedicated public entry to the unit.

Careful planning and design measures ensure separation of staff service and patient care areas, controlled access points, and visual access to patients, patient rooms, activity spaces and entries. Meticulous attention to finishes, furnishings, fixtures and equipment to prioritize safety and security for all. A flexible, daylight-filled great room supports human connection and provides visual and physical access to the landscaped courtyard designed for healing. Biophilic elements, finishes and furniture support well-being and foster a warm, residential atmosphere in a healthcare setting.
