天津大学是教育部直属国家重点大学和教育部与天津市联合共建的高水平大学，有着悠久的历史和优良的传统，其前身为创办于1895年的中国近代第一所大学——北洋大学，1951年更名为天津大学。 天津大学建筑学院的办学历史可上溯至1937年创建的天津工商学院建筑系，至今已有80年的历史。1952年，全国高校院系调整后，津沽大学建筑系（原天津工商学院建筑系）、北方交通大学建筑系（原唐山工学院建筑系）与天津大学土木系共同组建了天津大学建筑工程系。1954年成立天津大学建筑系。1997年6月，天津大学进行学院制改革，在原建筑系的基础上，成立了天津大学建筑学院。
