Since its launch in 2013, Superfront’s entire business concept was to create designs that can be applied to Ikea’s most common cabinet frames. Their latest release, Wood Collection, represents the company’s new step in their aim to motivate people to decorate their homes in a more sustainable manner.
“We design with sustainability in mind, whether it’s through encouraging recycling of Ikea cabinets that already exist in millions of homes – or from an aesthetic point of view. This mindset has resulted in what many refer to as timeless design, but also in a conscious use of materials that last over time and age well”, says Monica Born, one of Superfront’s two founders.
“Wood might be the least trendy of materials since it has been around us for millions of years, but this is also the reason why we feel so comfortable having it around us in our homes. It creates a warmth that few materials can compete with. The fact that we have chosen to work with wood materials that have FSC certification – for the Wood Collection as well as our lacquered MDF products – should add to the warm feeling”, adds Superfront’s other founder, Mick Born.
The Wood Collection consists of veneered doors and drawer fronts, sides, tops and plinths as well as the new Bar handles that stretch across the length or width of the fronts. There are two different designs available – Plain and Vertical – and the whole collection comes in six different colours that keep the grain of the wood visible.
“To make the new Wood Collection look the same tomorrow as it does today, we have chosen to work with ash wood which we treat to achieve the exact colour tones that we want. Ash wood has a wonderful looking grain and is relatively resistant to UV light by nature. The fact that we have treated the ash wood with a UV-resistant stain and topcoat means that it retains its character much longer than, for example, a walnut veneer that tends to fade a lot when exposed to light,” Monica continues.
Superfront thus stained the ash wood to achieve the six different colours, three of which are natural wood shades while the other three can be recognized from Superfront’s existing colour palette.
The Wood Collection will initially be available for the Ikea cabinet frames Metod, Pax and Bestå – making it possible to create kitchens, bathroom furniture, dressers, wardrobes and sideboards.
