Ten to One is a design + build studio which designed and has the capacity for production of products such as this flexible library / media / class / meeting room furniture system. The system was first implemented as a pro-bono project for Congreso and the Pan American Charter School in Philadelphia PA in 2014.
The Pan American Charter School was founded in 2008 by the nonprofit Congreso to offer North Philadelphia students a K-8 “student-centered” bilingual education in English and Spanish. An active community center with growing programming, theschool’s previously underutilized 1500 square-foot library area had to be flexible enough to serve as the school’s multi-media library as well as a meeting place for student, parent, teacher and community groups ranging in size from 2 to 50 throughout the day and evening.
To meet these needs, Ten to One designed a playful modular furniture system that allows a single piece to function as a desk, bookshelf, storage, and lounge seating. The pieces also function as organizing devices within the space. Multiple pieces can be quickly and easily moved, connected to each other by magnets and configured in numerous ways, from individual and small desk groupings to large conversation circles. The flexibility allows the relatively small space to perform on a much larger and open ended scale. The pieces serve to exemplify dynamic individuality as well as providing a nurturing and focused stage for a variety of uses. Using modularity with affordable materials and the application of super graphics, the space was transformed into a vibrant and super-flexible environment.
