Location:9 Robinson Road, Mid-Levels, Hong Kong
Project Year:2019
Category:Apartments
“Studio” as a norm usually applies for residential apartments laid out in open plans where size is a concern and limited for space planning. It benefits from smooth flow of space and visual connection without partitions to enlarge a space with size constraint.
What if the same idea of studio planning applied for a duplex with a size of 400 sqm. spreads through 2 floors? siDE Architects took the chance to push this idea to improvise and achieve the “Mega Studio”.
The idea functions well practically from the original brief to accommodate a single person owner of the duplex.
All private space locates on upper floor while public space locates on lower floor. The entrance from lower floor is formed with an artwork greeting the doorway. Connected with a tailor made see-through screen as handrail for the main staircase to hint the upper floor above. All spaces flow freely from this entrance area into the Dining Room with a balcony opens up to the astounding Victoria Harbour view attached with the Dining Room are the Study Room and the Living Room.
The Living Room is arranged with a TV which could be hidden by a sliding door of the TV cabinet on the end wall. This allows visibility through the Dining Area from the Study Room. You may walk around this area along a masonry feature wall to the gym and Powder Room behind.
The workstation behind the study table was made out of selected material to serve its function yet transparent to reflect the hidden private staircase behind it. It was designed with a variety of mechanism like a transformer to provide accommodation of different sizes of drawers, sliding basket for printer, revolving trays etc. Shelves are arrayed purposely for books accessed from the Study Room and then flipped for access from higher levels when standing on the hidden staircase. This transparent shelf incorporated into the workstation extends from lower level to the upper level in the void created.
The space above the Study Room is actually a void connecting to the Master Bedroom hence the hidden staircase gives the owner convenience with direct access to her working area below.
The Master Bedroom opens into the fully fitted Master Bathroom without door or wall and backed with a tranquil landscaped outdoor deck as the backdrop though full height foldable glass door.
The overall layout therefore becomes a mega studio not only in the 2-dimensional layout plan but also a 3-dimensional one flowing through 2 floors.
