Sociability, adaptability and domesticity are at the heart of the indoor-outdoor design concept for Paris housing organization RATP Habitat's new headquarters.
Key features
A three-storey wood-frame building conceived by Atelier Du Pont houses the office of RATP Habitat. Situated in Paris's 20th arrondissement, the 2,872-sq-m headquarters sports intimate workspaces, south-facing terraces and inhabitable rooftops. Designed to maximize interaction and exchange between employees, the combination of indoor and outdoor spaces encourages a wide variety of use throughout the workday. This flexibility is coherent in the entire building as Atelier Du Pont also created the interiors, furniture and signage.
Organized around two patios and an atrium shrouded in natural light, the interior is characterized by soft colours, wood finishes and an open-plan layout. An all-wood stringer staircase connects the levels. Considering the nature of RATP Habitat's work, much inspiration was taken from domestic design in making a collaborative, 'cosy' atmosphere. The designers developed a system of mobile partitions that allows users to design the spaces they need at any given time, a strategy that also helps to future-proof the office for further development.
Seating areas punctuate the lushly gardened layered rooftops, giving people green space for individual work or team bonding. Meanwhile, small greenhouses found on the lower two terraces can host meetings.
Frame's take
Nowadays, biophilic design is often touted to be present in work projects, but in practice, its manifestation often lacks creativity and thoroughness. At RATP Habitat's headquarters, though, the commitment is clear. In this case, outdoor space is nearly as fundamental as the interiors – its use heavily factors into the programming. At the same time, the natural finishes, purposeful light manipulation and organic layout support the concept. The architecture intuitively and effectively encourages employees to explore different modalities of work, giving myriad options for individuals to explore the solutions that work best for them.
