Design: XO Atelier
Client: Y12 Salon
Fabric Supply: Kvadrat, La Palma
A graphic setting for beauty and wellness treatments, Dubai studio Y12 is dressed in a series of bespoke, 1980s-inspired fittings.
Key features
Designed by XO Atelier, the salon is found in Dubai business-and-lifestyle centre ICD Brookfield Place. Extensive material research and custom furniture design went into the project. 'We didn't want to create yet another generic wellness space but an experience that would be distinctive and enjoyable,' says XO Atelier founder Vera Dieckmann. The prismatic entrance, for instance, was crafted from multicoloured acidified metal in the studio's workshop. Inside, a central bar and colour lab – clad in white tiling with blue grout – puts the magic of hair chemistry on full display to clients. The individual hair stations sport three-m-high mirrors, blue-and-purple gradient desks and blue or grey swivel chairs. Meanwhile, Y12's private treatment rooms take on an even more definitive look: they are surfaced entirely in emerald and blue marbled ceramic tiles. Geometric LED lighting throughout the space imparts the sought-after dynamic '80s vibe
Frame's take
Social media has turned salon spaces into stages. Where beauty treatments were once private experiences, a fresh transformation can now be broadcast instantaneously online by hairdresser and client alike. With beauty being an ever-growing market, this content does exceedingly well on platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. Between 2017 and 2018, Google reported that views of beauty-related content on the latter had increased 75 per cent. Statement spaces designed to tap into this phenomenon like Y12 are ahead of the curve, empowering employees to become content creators in their own right, marketing their own – and the salon's – work. At the same time, these designs entice customers in by way of an engaging visual experience.
