Shanghai Children’s Library is located at No.962 West Nanjing Road. In Shanghai, it plays the role of children’s literature resource center, children’s reading promotion and guidance center. With the rapid development of public culture, its branch library is planned to be built to optimize the facilities for children and protect their rights of reading.
The new branch library is located in Changfeng Business District, Putuo District, adjacent to Guangfu West Road in the north and Daduhe Road in the west. The Suzhou River is to the south of the site where there would be a waterside platform naturally; the north is only one way away from Changfeng Park. The site has the advantages of broad vision, greenery and waterscape, suitable for diverse activities, and convenient transportation.

A response to the city: A vast and colorful garden
From Changfeng Park to the Suzhou River, the existing urban park layout provides citizens with an ecological recreation area stretching for several kilometers from north to south. However, the site of the new library cuts off the serial interface of the landscape. Accordingly, from the perspective of urban planning, architects spare open space on the ground floor by the arched volume.
▼不同角度鸟瞰,aerial view from different angles
A unique area is defined not by the grand plaza, not by the landmark on the central axis, but by the river, the greenery and the bridging connection. In this way, the landscape on both sides can be continued, while the open space on the ground floor also produces a more attractive outdoor place for citizens and teenagers to communicate with each other.

Profound meaning:A bridge to the future
In terms of volumetric massing, the architects try to create an image highly integrated with the context because the new library should make the existing landscape more attractive rather than become interference. The greenery and sparkling water in the park would remind people of Monet’s world-famous painting “Bridge”. The natural, lively, and brilliant color on the artwork is pretty similar to the context on site. In addition, as a place for people to pursue knowledge, develop their bodies and characters, the library is also a bridge to the future that witnesses how people grow up. That’s the profound meaning behind the project.
Accordingly, the shape of the “bridge” was chosen as a sign of the library. Firstly, the massing stretching from east to west provides people with a broader view. Secondly, the building and the context are consistent with the spiritual temperament of its users, and then the poetic and picturesque public scenarios would emerge. Furthermore, the arched massing could attract the crowd, making the building present as an inspiring and multi-functional place, illuminating the urban life in the city.

Wonderful childhood:A vigorous reading jungle
Architects should logically place the reading space for teenagers of all ages from 0-16 into the library. So, they arrange the reading space in different levels vertically in the order of age from young to older. How the teenagers move in the library matches the process of how they grow up. The spatial experience of reading on different levels would awaken people of avant-garde reading modes at present. The layout of rooms is organized functionally logically; thus, a free, open, attractive and inclusive reading space will be created.
▼门厅智慧树,wisdom tree on the first floor
Children represent the future of humanity, like the budding forest, bursting of vitality, showing infinite energy and possibility. Architects refined the image of the forest that the pure and charming interior claddings were used. The cladding texture could help present a “reading forest” atmosphere when there is bright sunlight. At the same time, the interior claddings correspond to the façade then the logic of design becomes consistent in both internal and external space.

Lively façade:A dress that embraces sunlight and nature
The new library stands between the north and south parks. In other words, the scenery on both sides is quite good. It is relatively rare for us to enjoy the excellent view in such a library: while reading books, you can also embrace the sunlight and nature. Therefore, to open the interior to nature, the sunlight and the river is what we expect.
For the reasons above, transparent materials are selected as the main elements of the facades, where the glass curtain walls are used on both the north and south sides. The south side is adjacent to the city park, which means it is crucial to light up the interactivity of outdoor and indoor space. The curves in the interior space also match the arched bridge massing of the building. The wood materials are applied on the east and west facades and the hyperboloid ceiling beneath the bridge arch. The organic morphology and texture make the large-scale building more friendly and easily integrated into the surrounding greenery.

结语
Summarize
The overall design concept of the new library is an exploration of the future of children’s libraries, promoting the exemplary transformation from “library of books” to “library for people”. Children’s library advocates “children-oriented” operation, including services far more than lending books. It attaches great importance to the collection of various types of information suitable for the all-media era, and the organization of multi-element education activities. For example, facilities including puzzle hall, public platform, recording studio, training rooms, play space, AI bookstore, celebrity book bar and leisure space have been introduced.

In fact, the library is the cultural center of our times, so that children can gather here around common interests and learning fun. We are lucky to make every place full of childlike innocence and fun through our “brush”. When children integrate into every design in the details, the cold building exudes warmth and friendliness, so that children can benefit from it and frame their dreams in reading.

Finally, in the colorful “garden”, children would come and stay under the “Bridge” with curiosity. They would pass the “Wisdom Tree” in the lobby, then step on the stairs leading to the “Knowledge Sky” and enjoy reading on each level of “Reading jungles”. We hope that children of all ages can build their bridges between themselves and read, with innocence, knowledge and the horizon.
