A conceptual representation of temperature, and an experiential journey through a series of multi-sensory artistic and sculptural installations that“give shape” to air, inviting visitors to participate in an immersive laboratory of hot and cold experiences.
A gallery of multicultural, creative visions conceived by the international team of young researchers at Fabrica for Daikin – a firm that has always led the way in improving the environmental quality of the home, with products that blend design, efficient energy use and respect for nature and the environment.
Among the works exhibited, a kinetic installation in which moving feathers in a range of shapes, colours, and graphic patterns evoke the seasonal migration of exotic birds; meanwhile, tropical plants take shape in a series of ice compositions creating a path throughout the space. Venus and Neptune, respectively the hottest and coldest planets in the Solar System, become the inspiration for an acoustic experience, built from sampling the climatic sounds of these contrasting planets.
“In this project we conceived design as a practice that must communicate through form and function. An exchange between opposites that represents the distinctive approach taken by Fabrica, a place where young talents from across the globe can constantly engage with each other,in projects with universal appeal. A design that sets out from an object, and reaches towards sound, graphics and interactivity.”Sam Baron, director of design at Fabrica.
“HOT&COLD is a highly striking and appealing project, perhaps the most exciting highlight among the various initiatives organized to celebrate the launch of Daikin Emura, a stylish icon and authentic example of cutting-edge industrial design.”Marco Dall’Ombra, marketing manager for Daikin Italy.

Installations
Flora
Tropical Plants are encased in ice as an enigmatic symbol of hot & cold contrast. As the ice melts away and is collected in a glass vessel, it slowly reveals the hot plants, creating a poetic dialogue between hot & cold, that changes over the period of a day. Succulent plants have a special ability to retain water even with high internal temperatures of 52 °C.
Flow
Climatic phenomena are linked to extreme thermal conditions. The scientific behaviours of these temperature events are depicted as diagrams of light cast in ice, presented on plinths as laboratory exhibits. Water typically boils at 100 °C, yet is sensitive to atmospheric conditions such as high altitude and low pressure. In Denver, Colorado which is 1 mile above sea level, water boils at 95 °C.
Aroma
Aroma uses smell to evoke temperature related experiences. Six glass domed exhibits emit hot and cold essential oils specially concocted for their potent associations with Hot and Cold. Nerve fibres that signal hot and cold are also sensitive to menthol, an ingredient in mints. In humans beings the centre of the brain is from 0.5 to 1°C warmer than the epidural space.
Migration
A series of kinetic sculptures depicts the flocking patterns of migrating birds as they move between hot & cold climates. The 5 exhibits feature motorized, hand illustrated feathers to communicate the rituals of each bird species, characterized by height, distance and flock sizes during flight. The Artic Tern experience more daylight than any other creature on the planet due to its long migration.
Cascade
Cascade is inspired by the temperature state change from solid to liquid expressed as the moment when a frozen waterfall awakes from frost and begins to flow and ripple. The two installations use sensor activated wind propellers to stimulate a torrent of glass droplets. Fast moving waterfalls freeze differently from still water. The process involves the water dropping slightly below freezing point and then super cooling.
Cavern
An ice cavern, encrusted with glass stalactites becomes intimately lit as someone approaches. Using ambient light projected onto glass it suggests the presence of a fire, transforming a cold and uninhabitable cave into a place of primitive comfort and warmth. In cave dwelling cultures, fire was the essential source of survival.
Solar
Venus and Neptune, the hottest and coldest planets in the solar system emit atmospheric sounds as they orbit around the sun. Solar takes NASA’s interpretations of what planets sound like and remixes them as the highlight of a large-scale orbital installation that engages the audience with light, acoustics and the movement of model planets. The coldest and farthest planet in our solar system, Neptune, is 663° C colder than Venus with an average temperature of -201°C.
Air
The seemingly intangible air that surrounds is given form and presence through the heat of an oil lantern that slowly burns a black char inside borosilicate glass letters – the invisible becoming visible. Borosilicate glass has an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion – making it resistant to high temperatures. A glassmaker is required to work the material over a 1200°C flame.
