For one researcher living in New York City, a steep spot on a rock by a creek and at the edge of a forest is just the place to get away from it all. When they presented Faulkner Architects with their vision for a Creek House in Truckee, Calif., near Lake Tahoe, their main concern was not to harm the existing boulders. It was this requirement that inspired the design of the entire south-facing building, which cantilevered over several large boulders as if it did not touch the ground.

The exterior of the Creek House is clad in concrete, wood and dark panels that extend into the surrounding tone, making it well integrated into its environment. Faulkner architects designed the interior in a similar way, moving from dark alcoves to sunny Spaces where the textures of oak, concrete, steel, bluestone and white plaster walls all overlap.

Faulkner architects have described the home's Spaces as "strips of use" that slide between boulders. The central part of this concept is the Great Wall and entrance from the north; Where privacy is prioritized, but also sunlight maximized with some vistas; Layered Spaces, "concrete walls lead to a rock garden, which leads to Windows. These were designed to create a "contemplative building" with dense public areas and spacious, open private areas.

Open-plan living areas are at the heart of the house, with the den above letting light into these shared Spaces. Along the corridor in this area, there are two bedrooms and an immersive meditation space on the lower level, which can be used to receive guests when needed. Because the owners didn't want to do "huge maintenance" on the pool, they decided to integrate the water features into the home; There is an element of incredible calm in brutalist design.
