A住宅位于澳大利亚珀斯，它对当地的住宅现状发起了挑战。这是一座为小型地块设计的可持续公寓住宅，建筑师通过对商品材料的创新性运用，使住宅同时具备了紧凑和环保的特点。设计师的任务是为Whispering Smith事务所的总监Kate和她的伙伴Matt在在175平方米的场地中打造一个经济且可持续的单卧室住宅。最终的房屋占地70平米，其空间紧凑而灵活，可供30人举办晚宴，充分展示了小体量的巨大潜力。

Whispering Smith’s House A is a challenge to the status quo of housing in Perth. The sustainable apartment-house hybrid is designed for small lots and uses commercial materials in an innovative way to achieve a tight footprint and carbon neutral status. The brief was to take a 175m2 block under Perth’s single bedroom dwelling code, and make an affordable and sustainable home for Whispering Smith’s Director, Kate and her partner Matt. House A is 70m2 of compact, flexible and delightful spaces which are capable of hosting a dinner party for 30 guests, illustrating that small can be big.

A住宅是Whispering Smith与Kate的父亲合作开发的三处房产之一，其占地面积很小，为的是保护场地中已经长成的树木和一栋建造于1950年代的房屋。A住宅仅占用了场地空余的部分。

House A was the first house of three in development by feminist architecture firm, Whispering Smith, in partnership with Kate’s father. The diminutive footprint of the house was designed to maintain the existing mature trees and 1950’s house on site, with House A being allocated to the land left over.

A住宅的建成得益于其高效的建造计划。立墙平浇混凝土结构为其赋予了紧凑的体量和更高的空间利用率。房屋的细部处理展现出些许侘寂之美，未经处理的裸露材料为尺寸不大的空间赋予了舒适感和愉悦感。空间与体量的融合使住宅在无需建造门和墙壁的情况下也能够区别出私人区域和开放区域。

The house is a product of highly efficient planning and employed commercial tilt- up concrete construction methods to achieve a tighter & taller footprint. The project relied heavily on craft, detailing and a raw material or ‘wabi-sabi’ spec to provide amenity & delight in the small footprint. Whispering Smith merged spaces and volumes to achieve simultaneous privacy and openness without the need for doors and walls. When the cost of the build is considered in conjunction with the reduced investment in the land purchase it is apparent that innovative architecture meant the project was a financially viable one for its millennial occupants.

住宅前方的花园沿着场地边缘分布，成为一个公共的户外生活空间，为房主、附近的居民乃至鸟类提供了舒适的环境。这种对于前院场地的创新性利用能够使房屋更好地与街道形成融合，并为该区域带来文化和环境上的助益，使越来越密集的城市空间依旧能够拥有一丝绿意。

House A’s front garden makes use of the verge as a native garden and outdoor living area and has increased the amenity of both the occupants of the house, the residents of the street and the local birdlife. The concept of using the often-empty front setback and associated verge to provide density and better engagement with street is an important cultural and environmental benefit, as well as replacing the much-needed green space for occupants as cities densify.

住宅的浅灰色混凝土表面呈现出简洁的观感，与周围的砖瓦房屋形成鲜明的对比。黄昏时，住宅仿佛随着光线渐渐消失，只柔和地映射出余晖的颜色。Whispering Smith凭借A住宅该改变了低质量住宅的普遍现状，并在此过程中使人们感受到建筑所蕴含的积极力量。

The soft grey concrete planes absorb and reflect the surrounding natural landscape, and its minimal form is in stark contrast to its ubiquitous brick and tile neighbors. In the evenings, House A almost disappears into the late afternoon light, softly reflecting the colors of Scarborough’s sunsets. Whispering Smith designed House A to challenge the status quo of oversized and low-quality housing, and in the process, they have found a way to engage people with the positive power of architecture.
