Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the founding of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Block 51 is part of a 27,000 square metre expansion plan in line with the polytechnic’s vision to be the platform for modern dynamic tertiary education, complete with educational facilities that are designed with environmental sensitivity.
External View- a triangulated steel and glass façade screen
Wrapped in a triangulated steel and glass façade screen, the large atrium interiors are washed by the dynamic movement of shadows. The façade skin also doubles up as a climate modulator, reducing heat and glare to the spaces within.
The design celebrates the Makan Place as an important node, and expands its connectivity to the rest of the campus via the Eco-Deck. Inspired by the tapering volumes of the lecture theatres, the slanting forms of Block 51 float above the deck, encouraging the flow of air through the naturally ventilated communal areas

Centrally located within the campus and rising eight storeys above the existing Makan Place food court, the nine-storey building houses 26 new classrooms, eight lecture theatres and a large food court at the ground level, including six new floors with open-air study spaces for students. It is also the tallest building on campus.
The façade shading elements form the main architectural design expression, which provides opportunities for ideal daylighting, while the optimisation of naturally ventilated areas throughout the building provides comfortable study and communal areas for students.
The interior design draws reference from the aesthetics of the façade shading elements, where perforated cladding allows daylight to cast gentle speckled shadows on the walls.
As a reflection of the architectural language, the interior design applies the same triangulated pattern in gradated shades of grey, much like the different grey hues that shadows contain.
Further delineations of the wall pattern with simple plaster groove lines add a subtle depth and texture to the feature walls.
In the same spirit of playing with shadows, the floor finish incorporates slanting lines stretching across the open spaces, in greys and whites, with bold bright splashes of aquamarine that are echoed along some of the vertical planes as well.
The overall effect is cool, modern and serious, complementing the academic pursuit of knowledge and skills that takes place in the building.
