Japanese retailer Muji first entered the Canadian market in 2014 with a flagship store in Toronto. And now, three years on, Muji has shifted its focus to the west coast, opening a new flagship in Vancouver. Muji found a fitting location in the city’s West End district, and which at 14,507 sq.ft. is even the company’s biggest store outside Asia. Two existing but separate units were merged to be able implement the retailer’s elaborate store concept. Similarly to many other branches across the planet, the store interior is infused with wood, creating slightly rustic, welcoming settings across the entire premises.

Muji has pulled out all the stops, and this manifests especially in the new store’s offerings and services, and some make its debut in the country. So, next to fhe full range of household goods, apparel and food, shoppers are in for some special treats. There’s Muji Labo, a special project that kicked off in 2005 to explore basic concepts in apparel from a free and creative approach, and which evolved into an ongoing initiative that innovatively experiments with styles, materials and manufacturing processes. Muji Labo learns through product development and eventually the result becomes standard apparel in all Muji stores, reflecting practical design and conscientious materials that consider both the producer and the environment.

Also available is Muji Yourself, a customization service that includes embroidery, stamps, gift wrapping and label printing. Also to be found here is the aroma bar, a place where shoppers create a customized fragrance blend by choosing from more than 40 essential oils. Last but certainly not least, there’s the Muji Coffee Counter. It’s a collab between the retailer and Ethical Bean Coffee, a leading supplier of 100% fairtrade certified organic coffee, serves affordable quality coffee by the cup.
