The design for the cultural exchange center finds inspiration in the traditions ofcourtyard architecture while attempting to respect the existing mountain terrainand capture views of the Yellow Mountains in the distance.
One of the outstanding features of the Yellow Mountain region is the beautyofthe terrain and landscape. Visitors come to Yellow Mountains in large numbersto reconnect with nature and become rejuvenated by the fresh mountain airand pleasant natural climate.
The use of a courtyard typology for the design and organization of the facilityaims to provide direct connections to the natural beauty of the site and viewsfrom every room and function. Because of the environmental sensitivity of thetopography the conceptual courtyard is pinched in the middle by two hillsidesthat divide the shallower sloped areas of the site in two. With the additional overall slope of the hillside site the building form also rises at it recedes from the access road.
The pinching and natural slope creates two separate courtyards as the eastandwest sides of the building inflect inward and intersect. These exterior courtyardswill be designed to have different characters with the forecourt more formallyorganized and connected to the common areas of the program providing exterior seating for the restaurant and bar, as well as informal seating areas for smallgatherings of visitors. It also acts as a focal point for visitors immediately uponentering the main lobby and gallery space.
The second or rear courtyard maintains the more steeply sloping existing topog-raphy and connects with the surrounding exterior hillside as the building form islifted off the ground along the north east side of the courtyard.
This courtyard willalso reflect the more natural landscape of the region with a small seating area aswell as access from the sleeping rooms that overlook this courtyard. The meeting rooms and public spaces are primarily located on the lower levelswith the sleeping rooms at the highest levels and positioned so the each roomhas a view of the yellow mountains in the distance.
