The Toronto Carpet Factory is an iconic landmark of Toronto’s booming manufacturing era. Built between 1899 and 1912, the seven buildings take up an entire city block, creating a complex of historical architecture and converted factories. Carefully restored and updated, the factory is now home to over 120 businesses.

BMD was hired by York Heritage and Hullmark to develop a new identity and wayfinding system to unite the buildings and better define the unique character of the buildings and those who work in them. BMD conducted interviews with partners, tenants, and real estate agents to develop a new brand position for the TCF. A focus on historic preservation and contemporary activation informed a vibrant, flexible new identity which visually unites the various buildings.

The signage and wayfinding is designed to support, not distract from the historic buildings. With users in mind, we developed system that helped identify the site and guide visitors to their destination within the complex. Colour coding, based on the identity, and subtle details – like sign lengths that indicate relative distances – are integrated throughout the program to help navigate the site.

In addition to positioning, visual identity and wayfinding, BMD also designed a new website for the TCF that features its history, features and complex-wide directory.
