White walls are timeless, perhaps it is time to go much darker.

Ever since we grew up as teenagers, Afnan & I was always was fascinated & captivated by dark passages and spaces. Once working on several coastal area projects this happened upon our client calling in to check out a huge home at

Kannur, Kerala and just out of curiosity, called for an appointment to check out the home and was told to design a bedroom interior at first.

Once inside, however, we were awestruck by “everything you could want in a double height bedroom: volume, spacious room, a closet , 13-foot ceiling. All we could think was: ‘oh my god!.” Given the verity that the bedroom is a personal space usually professed as a relaxing and serene environment, the colors associated with its interior are usually pastels, neutrals and soft shades. We wanted to create a striking bedroom décor even with intimidating colors such as dark toned colors. It’s uncommon to see a dark bedroom but we choose to select & made it pleasant.

Black or dark tones is one of the unusual choices in the color scheme when it comes to shaping cool bachelor pads. The bedroom is no diverse in this regard, and the sinister backdrop allows the beautiful light fixtures and the wonderful vase collection to shine through brilliantly. This bedroom was designed to have white ceiling which, in most cases, would be an unnoticeable feature. However, in this case it stands out, mainly in contrast with the dark walls. The walls are not just black but also matted with a tint of Russian blue color.

They are complimented with elegant custom made brass handled wall mounted lights. To create a uniform décor, the curtains are also a shade of black and the wooden plank flooring is diagonally angled to give a different perspective. And as a designer with clients who are among Malabar Coast & elite, we incorporated a full complement of technology, but kept it hidden. In the look alike fire space, for example, a secret panel opens to reveal a flat-screen TV & cords; a gesture, we demonstrated “one can always embrace technology, but don’t have to let it overtake one's space. Striving for an alchemy of old and new, we also tracked down fun decor finds.

The royal blue velvet sofa & 7 level crystal chandelier is from Kare and brass legged bed side table was found online. An Art Deco inspired crystal plates; Mid century Danish Floor Lamp were spotted at the San Francisco. Antiques Show, bedding from Créations Métaphores.

A well-designed bedroom can be very relaxing and comfortable if decorated even in black. This one, for example, looks like a surreptitious hideaway. It’s very deep because of the dark walls and furniture but the grey rugs, bedding & fur foot bed create some contrast.The ceiling, ambient light fixtures, the carpet and the bed are all draped in dark shades to accentuate this effect. A just right example of how remarkable lighting can modify the appeal of a dark room…

One of our desired interior paint colors of the year is Russian Blue Black Flame — a gorgeous blend of navy and black that puts the limelight on décor just like white walls.
