During the 1980s, the City of Palm Desert was hit hard by a decline in retail sales, making it challenging to balance a city budget. Officials wanted to create a new year-round shopping destination to help generate more revenue. But they faced difficulties because retail was primarily supported by tourism in the winter. That is until the Gardens on El Paseo was built. Filled with shade gardens, lush palm paseo’s and major public space, Gardens has become the year round destination for local residents and tourist alike. At its heart, the Gardens has a large gathering space that is now home to public concerts and important City events like the yearly golf cart parade.
