Chapter Two
INTERVIEW
Q1:
What hobbies balance your work and life?
WHL:
I enjoy baking bite size snacks, binging on tv series and reading up on branches of the I-Ching易经. Work is living and life is working but having different brain focus at different times re-charges me and inspires my work. I used to participate in immersive gaming but frequent traveling put a halt to that.
。
MW:
Singing, watching TV serials or variety shows.
JL: Yoga.
Q2:
Which woman do you admire for her dignity, nerve, sangfroid?
WHL:
Do I have to admire anyone? Most recently impressed by Theresa May for her courage and political grit and Cara Delevinge for her consistently bold opinions against social predators.
MW:
Chanel. She was independent, not afraid of challenging traditions and had an uniquely strong personal style. She developed her interest in fashion into a world renowned top-notch fashion empire, an admirable and inspiring tale of success for me.
JL:
My mom. She always manages to remind me to focus back onto the things that matter most, and not fret unnecessarily over trivial distractions.
Q3: D
o you believe that fate balances our lives and that everything happens for a reason?
WHL:
I believe our paths are set in a direction but molded by hard work, environment and self-control. "Everything happens for a reason" is a convenient rose-tinted stance in bad situations, I prefer "What can we do next?"
。
MW:
Yes. I believe that good deeds result in positive fate. An example is my friend returning the favour after I have helped him/her. This of course applies to negative actions.
JL:
Yes, but our choices also make a difference.Knowing when to make timely and appropriate decisions, is a super power I would love to have!
Q4:
What puts you out of balance and keeps you up at night?
WHL: "
What can we do next?"
。
MW:
Thinking about great ideas or topics that interest me makes me very excited and keeps me up for hours.
JL:
TV shows, Netflix.
Q5:
What food do you associate with your family that gives you a feeling of equilibrium?
WHL:
My family loves reinventing typical Asian homecooked fare, my favourite being 'Black egg' - simply undercooked, ugly scrambled eggs with lots of black sesame oil and dark soy sauce.
。
MW:
Grandma’s old hen soup.
JL:
Home cooked soup.
Q6:
Being impartial is SPARK the place you thought you would end up working?
WHL: I
never thought much of where I would end up, to begin with. Loosely put I wanted to have freedom of expression and constant exposure, whatever I end up doing. SPARK was a temporary stopover turned permanent home.
。
MW:
Yes, I like the design creativity, company culture and brand philosophy of SPARK.
JL:
No, my other childhood ambitions included: being a vet, or a graphic designer.
Q7:
Where would we find you chilling at 10.00am on a Sunday morning?
WHL:
Beviamo, over black coffee and peanut butter.
。
MW:
Bed. Work hard, sleep harder.
JL:
Breakfast with my husband and my dog.
Q8:
What music gives you a sense of tranquility?
WHL:
Discordant music with strong rhythms, stirring and anthemic. Currently listening to: Balanescu Quartet’s interpretation of Computer Love Seduction, Rene Aubry Sunset on M, Dardust Arrival of the Birds, Cinematic Orchestra.
。
MW:
Love songs sung by lady singers with incredible voices.
JL:
Tunes played on an acoustic guitar.
Q9:
Would you say that you are imperturbable by nature?
WHL:
Manic by nature, fortunately surrounded by imperturbable beings
。
MW:
I would say yes. Being agitated does not solve any problems, it is more practical to stay calm and resolve issues in a peaceful mode.
JL:
Working towards that.
Q10:
Does your countenance give you away?
WHL:
I fail miserably at Poker
。
MW:
Normally no, unless I am extremely happy or angry.
JL:
It depends on who’s looking.
SPARK's director Stephen Pimbley quoted Anna Eleanor Roosevelt:
“
A woman is like a teabag -
you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.
”
Happy International Women’s Day!
