The
Future Dining Hall
should be a place of social learning and interaction. Drawing inspiration from our experience in design retail food courts and dining facilities at boutique hotels we believe that there is a real opportunity to elevate how Dining Halls are traditionally perceived, used and valued. These spaces can be used to encourage students to come together and spend time together not just at lunch but also between classes or, in the case of boarding students, in the evenings after school.

A key factor in school design is defining different characters for different functions. For our design at Chengdu Westminster School, we focused on making the dining area a
Transaction Area
between the Academic buildings and sporting facilities. With a triple-height atrium and generous feature stair, the design creates an open yet relaxing space for both students and school staff. Warm, softer materials are used to define a different nature of space in comparison to the design of the Interiors spaces within the academic building. Students will use this bright and airy space not only fordining, but also during their break time between classes for a quick and healthy snack alongside a conversation with their friends.

Blurring the Boundary

Our approach for our proposed design at
Dehong Shanghai School (a sisterschool to the Dulwich College International (DCI) network of schools)
was slightly different. Our strategy focused on
Blurring the Boundary
between the inside and out. Outdoor seating has been maximized and allows for a direct visual and physical connection to the large, multiuse ‘SchoolGreen’ that sits at the centre of the campus. By incorporating education elements including edible gardens, the outdoor deck can be used for teaching purposes and help educate students on how their food is grown, harvested and consumed. The variety of seating types gives students the flexibility to have both group discussion and spaces for individual, quiet refletion.

During the lunch break,
time-saving
is an important factor for school students, teachers and dining Hall operators. By working closely with the Education team at
Dehong Shanghai School
, we have helped to develop a strategy that provides separated Food Islands and themed food counters. Students are free to choose between a variety of at least five gastronomies that include mixtures of Eastern and Western cuisines. Students naturally split into several smaller groups which in turn reduces the pressure on the service time and helps shorten the queuing time.

Multi-purpose
- Dining halls play an important role in the school day, especially in the case of boarding schools. As schools function more likea learning and living community, dining hall can be seen as the community centre of the campus. For a new International school in Chengdu designed by BroadwayMalyan, the dining hall is envisaged to function as a multiuse space to be used by the boarding students in the evenings who have accommodation directly above. Split over two levels, It will incorporate a parents waiting area with coffee bar and can be easily rearranged to become a work space forboarding students in the evening after dinner. A food and hydroponics lab isused for educating students in how food can be grown, cultivated, prepared and enjoyed and is located on the lower level of the Dining Hall.

-餐饮区域在学校日常时期起着重要作用,尤其是在寄宿学校中。由于学校的功能更像是一个学习和生活的混合社区,餐饮区域可被视为校园的社区中心。针对BM设计的成都一所新的国际学校,餐厅将作为一个多用途空间,供寄宿学生在课后使用。它分为两层,其中包括一个带咖啡吧的家长等候区,可以很容易地调整功能,晚餐后成为寄宿学生的工作区。食品和水培实验室位于下层的餐饮区域,用于教育学生如何种植,栽培,烹饪和享用食物。

With continuing urbanization not just in China but across the world, school sites are becoming increasingly denser. By integrating the functions of dining, social interaction, flexibility and education in food, there is a real opportunity for Dining Halls to be atruly unique space and not just a part of the school that sits empty for most of the day. Modern flexible furniture and lighting solutions now allow the dining halls to be an adaptive and multifunction space within the school,suiting a multitude of different scenarios as part of the smart campus strategy.
随着中国与全球范围内的持续城市化进程,学校场所也变得越来越紧张。通过整合就餐、社交空间、符合功能和食品实验室功能,未来的餐饮区域确实有机会成为一个独特的空间,而不仅仅是一天中大部分时间都空着的学校一部分。目前,灵活的现代家具和照明解决方案使餐厅成为学校内部适应多功能空间成为可能,作为智能校园策略的一部分,可以适应多种不同的使用场景。
