It may be an unpopular opinion, but it is our personal belief that not all spooky houses are haunted houses. But even if they are, who’s to say that the resident ghosts aren’t friendly ones? If the possibility of lingering spirits doesn’t bother you—or if it intrigues you—rest assured that there are a slew of haunted Airbnbs available throughout the month of October. From a white terraced manor house outside Washington, D.C., to the famous Henry Derby House in Salem, Massachusetts, the homes on offer are ready for the spooky season, to say the least. All products featured on Architectural Digest are independently selected by our editors. And in honor of the film’s 25th anniversary and upcoming 2022 Scream release, Airbnb is offering three $5 one-night stays (on October 27, October 29, and October 31) in the house that set the bar for horror films. Plus, this Airbnb experience is hosted by the iconic Dewey Riley (David Arquette). As expected, there will be a Scream movie marathon (on VHS, of course), the instantly recognizable “brick phone” with a dedicated line to the one and only Ghostface, and unrestricted access to the Scream estate in all its original glory. Think knife marks on the doors and the garage where Dewey’s sister met her untimely demise. Be sure to book on October 12 at 1 p.m. for a chance to tempt fate—if you dare.Built in 1852, Linville Manor isn’t exactly a creepy residence, but it has all the fixings of an antique house perfect for fall: Creaky wood staircases, dark wood furnishings, and lots of red. Plus, it and the grand beech tree—the third oldest in Maryland—reside on one of its earliest land grant properties. Though the owners live in the estate’s east wing, visitors can freely roam the additional four private bedrooms, three and a half baths, dining room, library, ballroom, media room, and lounge.History buffs (and those looking to take an educational vacation) will certainly appreciate this estate: Its farmhouse and barn were used as a makeshift field hospital immediately after the Civil War’s Battle of Gettysburg. The homeowner and her pets live full-time in the home, but she warns, “I will be your only ‘living’ host, but there are many others who reside with me. They have lived at the farm for many, many years—some for centuries. Yes, the house is haunted, but [the ghosts] are all friendly!” There may be quite a few souls meandering around the property, but with a 100-acre grassy backyard, it will hardly get too crowded here. The iconic buttery yellow Henry Derby House in Salem looks more like a dollhouse than a haunted house—and not in an eerie way. That said, guests have reported hearing strange sounds and seeing odd hallucinations while spending time in the 19th-century Greek Revival-style home. It’s even be said that the four-bedroom home can invade visitors’ dreams—even after just one night.
As chilling as this collection of eerie properties may be, however, all of the historic homes—some of which have been standing since the early 19th century—are design-centric masterpieces in their own rights. And luckily, there is hardly a shortage of distinguished estates that are equal parts dignified and ominous scattered throughout the country. In addition to the multiple bedrooms, there is a family room, kitchen, dining room with space for six at the table, and living room on the first floor. And if it’s not too chilly, consider an alfresco cocktail hour amongst the trees in the expansive back garden.

St. Paul, MinnesotaErected towards the end of the 19th century, the mysterious Minnesota castle remained in the same family for quite a few generations—and it shows. There are so many odd antiques and curiosities with backstories that may be up for debate. Still, one indisputable fact is that they infuse the home with charisma in a way that contemporary decor doesn’t.Guests can make themselves at home in the master suite, which features exceptionally high ceilings and an impressive amount of natural light. But for those visitors who’d rather spend their time outside, bring a glass of wine down to the enclosed courtyard and light the fire pit.$127 at Airbnb

Seguin, TexasSituated within the town’s quaint, historic downtown area, a truly haunted 1850s former hotel is more than ready for guests. It’s been recently restored for more modern residents, but it still boasts that quintessential antique feel throughout the 2,800-square-foot second floor, which is complete with a charming five-room suite. Did we mention that there’s also an unrestored 11-room area whose dark wood doors are practically begging to be opened?$249 at Airbnb

New Orleans, LouisianaIf there is one American city famous for its massive ghost population, it’s New Orleans, and the Parks-Bowman mansion in the heart of the city’s Garden District is just one of many homes in which the spirits drift. It may be haunted, but it’s highly serene with oak and palm trees, three ultra-wide porches on all three stories, and a supremely manicured garden surrounding a lap pool. One detail to note: The bedroom is most definitely haunted by a friendly little girl who died in the 1890s. If you’re not sure which one she is, look out for a yellow dress.$127 at Airbnb

Jerome, ArizonaDubbed The Haunted Honeymoon Cottage by some and the Jewel of Jerome by others, the multi-bedroom bungalow is nestled among a spacious lawn, rose garden, and small fruit orchard across 10 acres. As for the haunted elements, visitors have noted several seemingly impossible sightings: A thin, dark-haired woman clad in white, a grumpy old miner, and a tall gentleman wearing a top hat. Plus, on occasion, guests can hear very faint parlor music and wind chimes sans wind. If that isn’t utterly spooky, we aren’t quite sure what is.$150 at Airbnb
