Since early summer when travel restrictions started loosening and borders began opening, plenty of travel-hungry Americans have been making up for lost time. However, as Robert Frost admitted, “nothing gold can stay,” and for some, the days of working from a beachfront cabana in Seminyak, Bali or a cozy wrought iron-enveloped balcony in Paris’ 16th arrondissement may be nearing a fateful end. With that in mind, Labor Day, the last hurrah of the summer, is looming, and there is hardly a shortage of hot spots to visit before office life eclipses our future travel plans. All products featured on Architectural Digest are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission. In 2018, the homeowners, a Dutch-Canadian family, enlisted the husband-and-wife duo behind Group AU to completely reimagine the three-bedroom home nestled within a highly wooded lot in the Berkshires. The black-painted board and batten facade, wood-paneled sloped ceilings, and open layout give the space an undeniable Scandinavian feel. Even the decor—colorful hairpin stools, Poul Henningsen pendants, and organic materials—are utterly Mid-Century Modern.Appropriately named the Cliff House, this Mid-Century-inspired bungalow is built right into a red rock wall of a canyon alcove in Cortez, Colorado. And just around the corner from the house, in another rocky niche, is a lawn outfitted with comfortable porch seating for al fresco cocktail hours. One feature—or lack that of—to note is the absence of televisions. The homeowners are such fans of the surrounding desert that they opted out of screens altogether to be more in the moment when spending time in the Cliff House. There is, however, ultra-high-speed Wifi so that guests don’t have to sacrifice missing the latest episode of their favorite shows or an important email.A cabin that’s equal parts rustic and polished, the post and beam converted barn is arranged in a traditional saltbox configuration that’s completely devoid of nails (only joinery), which explains the impressive scale of the rugged rough-hewn timber posts. Another benefit of the old-school design? Plenty of space in the open floor plan that’s decorated with Mid-Century icons, including Nogucci lighting. The exterior may be painted matte black, but the interiors are bright and airy with a flood of natural light courtesy of the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living area. But as is the case with most homes, the kitchen—a sizable gallery space lit by fire-engine-red Danish pendants—is the best room in the house. As soon as photographer, podcast host, and interior designer Caroline Lee her partner, Jayden, and her brother, Robert bought the two-bedroom A-line retreat on the outskirts of Palm Springs, she had a vision for the interiors: a cheerful, bright haven in buttercup yellow, millennial pink, warm neutrals, and touches of deep emerald green. And only an hour and a half away from the middle of L.A., it makes for a good escape. Plus, Palm Springs can get warm—sometimes above 100 degrees Farenheight, and the glamorously designed pool is just one of the house’s saving graces.
From luxurious properties in Airbnb’s Plus collection to ranch houses built directly onto an alcove of a red rock cliff, there are plenty of spots across the U.S. with availability this Labor Day weekend. No matter which place you book, you can’t go wrong.More importantly, though, the chalet is totally secluded, offering a sense of privacy and quiet that anyone fleeing a major city may crave. That said, it’s only five minutes from Lake Buel and the charming ski town, Great Barrington.

Valdez, NMWith thoughtful, earth-toned interiors—curated by fashion designer Raquel Allegra—Many Feathers Ranch is a calming refuge tucked into a quiet canyon at the base of Taos Ski Valley.
