“In the future, we will still live in the city but yearn for natural life; or we will leave the city to choose the natural environment and construct an utopian life? The balance between city and nature has changed greatly in the past two decades. With the improvement of transportation, the connection of urban and rural, and the change of digital products, both residential tastes and visual preferences have become flattened. Today, it is still necessary for us to discuss the existence of differences or not? By discussing the ‘Invisible Sensibility’ in our society and natural environment, this exhibition content tries to give another view of living to face the future in this flattened society.” ─ Jenchieh Hung

Invisible Sensibility ─ Futurity of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) Tongji University and Fosun Architecture Micromuseum is located in the Bund Finance Center, designed by British architects Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio. With stone and brass presenting the opulence and grandeur of Shanghai, these buildings continue the typical façade style of the Bund.

Invisible Sensibility ─ Fosun Architecture Micromuseum consists of two integrated L-shaped blocks. On the front of the white box, there are two elongated rectangular openings, while the openings suggest two axes in different directions, with one providing a quiet ‘dark space’ with music of insects and birds, and the other a ‘light space’ where the models of the exhibition are discernible. The dark and light spaces coincide with a number of texts springing up on the façade, in the form of a gradual floating pattern that implicitly reveals the connection between the two spaces, both inside and outside, as well as transforming the traditional display boards of the exhibition into an iconic design.

On entering the ‘dark space’, the walls on either side narrow the interior, creating a sense of tension; walking inside, it is dark as night and the sound of insects and birds can be heard. At this point, the sense of hearing replaces the sense of sight, offering an experience of the site that is different from daily life. Deeper into the space, a long and thin opening provides a ray of white light to replace something behind the black walls, and then at the height of waist, a large number of architectural models can be viewed through the narrow and long opening.

Walking to the other side of the box, which is the ‘light space’, the opening is lit by clean white light. Through the narrow and long opening in the white wall figures on the opposite side of the wall can be spot and the sight of them can be caught. On its stand are several models of undulating buildings, interconnected with the opening in the ‘dark space’, so that it becomes clear that the dark and light spaces provide visual and auditory penetration.

This pure box with darkness and light is a metaphor for the relationship between nature and the city: they are two sides of the same coin, hiding each other and replacing each other. When the first structure is built in nature, it is like the first light in the darkness of the night; when one looks back at nature from the city, one is filled with longing and anticipation. The exhibition provides a secluded space for visitors to perceive, suggesting how they can move between the city and nature, capturing the differences in place as a metaphor for the waxing and waning of the boundary between nature and the city.
