With respect to the familiarity of a much beloved venue, the design references relaxed beachside boutique hotels. More in line with a domestic space rather than a commercial one, it is somewhere to lounge and read a book, meet some friends at the large communal tables for a long lazy lunch and finish the day with sandy feet and a martini.

With weddings most weekends it needed to be a very flexible and adaptable space. The built-in furniture and shelving create a foundation on which to build layers – it is recognisable as Dunes with this framework but also able to be dressed in a multitude of ways.

Due to a limited budget, a lot of thought and time went into restoring and sourcing vintage furniture and objects and finding ways to make new pieces from what we had. All the coffee tables were made using offcuts and old doors and the cupboard handles are made from outdoor decking offcuts. Because of the ridges they have good grip. Each was then hand painted. I’m interested in creating little moments which make people stop for a second and notice. The strange texture of the fibreglass, the roughness of the japanese tile inlays, the hand painted cabinet handles are all details which can easily be overlooked but if seen make you pause even fleetingly.
